Before a flood
1. Check with your local emergency management office, to determine if your property or place of business is in danger of flooding.
2. Learn flood-warning signs and your communities alert programs.
3. Learn evacuation routes from home and from work. Include several alternative evacuation routes.
4. Have disaster supplies on hand, either at home or in your car if you are at work:
 |
Flashlights and extra batteries. |
 |
Portable, battery-operated radio and extra batteries. |
 |
First aid kit, include needed medications. |
 |
Food and water for at least 2 weeks. In the event that power is not available, include canned or dried foods. |
 |
Manual can opener. |
 |
Identification, copies of insurance policies, cash or credit cards. |
 |
Appropriate clothes. |
In the event family members are separated during a flood
1. Develop a communication plan for getting back together.
2. Have a list of phone numbers with you (e.g. work, school, day care, cell, pagers, contact person, etc.)
3. Select a designated "family contact" person. Select someone who resides in an unaffected area.
Instruct children on how and when to call 911, police, fire department and which radio station to listen to for your area.
If your child is at school or day care, leave contact numbers with the office or place a list of numbers in backpacks, book bags or lunchboxes. Anything your child may have with them when away from home.
